Walker is a nickname that I picked out for myself freshman year. There used to be a BBS on campus, and when I got started on it, I picked out the "handle" (hey, that's what the software package called it) of Walker for when I was on the chat channels.
One reason I picked out Walker was that I didn't have a car, and I didn't drive. Therefore, I walked everywhere. I'm 6'2", in decent shape, and walk quickly enough that this isn't too bad for the day-to-day sort of thing.
Another reason I picked out Walker (and this is the English major geek side of me coming out), was that a walker is a big figure in a lot of things that I had read, and enjoyed. The character of Strider out of Tolkien, the Walkin' Dude from Stephen King' s book The Stand, and from my childhood years, the Phantom, who had the name Ghost-Who-Walks (Mr. Walker to the clueless pilots who flew him wherever he needed to go). It just sounded really kinda neat and so I took it and ran with it.
I am nowhere near being the first person who thought this was a neat idea for a nickname, so I occasionally hear from other people who have known a Walker. Kinda neat...
