THIEVES & KINGS #27

by Mark Oakley

The Skinny: At last, the story turns to Princess Katara in the Sleeping Forest. She's been busy forming an army of trolls and holding a certain character prisoner. Many secrets are revealed.

The Writing: I was seriously wondering if I'd somehow missed an issue. Lately, T&K has really been flitting around plotwise. In #25, we got to see much more of Soracia's life than ever, and #26 follows Rubel's capture and more of Heath's life. Now, we actually see 2 characters who've not been shown in "realtime" much. In doing so, many questions are answered regarding the past between Quinton, Sorcia, the Red Sorceress, etc. Quite fascinating to this longtime reader of the book, it is. And still Thieves and Kings marches on, with more questions to be answered.

The Art: I wish M'Oak's lettering would improve, even if he had to go the computer font route. It's readable and I don't mind it so much, but it's not very neat.

Etc:--Katara has an odd shock of hair which alternately appears on the far side of her face, whichever it is. It's a little distracting, not to mention
--So wait. If Locumire is an "aborted" red sorceress, does this make her a redhead, too? Oyyyyy...too many...
--No text pieces this time. In fact, it seems that there've been fewer of those lately.

The Verdict: Somehow, this T&K isn't quite as engaging as usual. The sheer amount of info threatens to overload. Still, it's a worthy issue in my flat-out favorite comic series. Grade: Very Good [3.5]
