The Way Things Should BeWell, by now, a couple things seem to be certain. You know what they are, I know what they are, but I'm going to repeat them here because they make a good introduction. Al Gore is going to win the popular vote, but lose the electoral college vote, and therefore the presidential election. It will be the first time since 1888 that a candidate will have won the popular vote but lost the race. There will be those who will push for electors to change their votes. There will be those who will push for a revote in Palm Beach County. But, in the end, if Bush takes the electoral college, and Gore's 220,000 margin of victory in the popular vote turns out for naught, we can all rest easy. Because, in the end, it'll be what's important that matters. And that is that the system was followed. Look, so what if it's called an "election?" Who cares what the ephemeral "will of the people" is anyway? This isn't a democracy here, it's a representative democracy or a republic, and dammit, that means that if it's convenient to ignore what the greater number of people want, then we can do so! So what if the Palm Beach ballot was illegal, both parties approved it! Don't buck the system, buddy. The system is what's important. You think it's what you want that's important? Fuck no! It's about following rules. So it doesn't matter who gets the most votes by the people, it's all about the electoral college. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I hear you whining about how it was created because the Founding Fathers wanted to make sure that the masses wouldn't elect someone that the governing elite disapproved of, that its time has past, I've heard it all. So what? Look, around here, we follow the system. It's the system that matters. So, look. Be happy with what you get. And obey the system. There's a secret entry here. Look closely, and you may find it. |
