Shirking ResponsibilityI find myself with a bit of a dilemma. Naturally, not knowing what to do, I turn to you, my beloved readers. I've been a member of BMG since before I really started using the Internet. Say, 1994 (which is 6 years for those of you about to say it wasn't that long ago that it was 1994 and you remember it perfectly and... yes. I remember it quite well, too, but it's been 6 years, and not a whole lot of things have stayed constant in my life since then, so it's a while ago. Deal) or so. Anyway, yesterday I was at their website, and after logging myself in and saying that No, I didn't want the Freak of the Week selection they thought would be just PERFECT for me, I noticed a little button in the left-hand column that said "Your Free CDs" And I started thinking. Had... had I ever gotten the free CDs from BMG? I know I'd gotten the 4 free ones when I signed up... but had I gotten the rest? I clicked. And it said to me, "You've met the qualifications, and may now select your 3 free CDs!" Here's where the dilemma comes in. I usually consider purchases fairly closely before I make them. Even now, when I'm doing a damn good job at winning the money game, I still tend to look at actual purchases kinda closely (it took me about half an hour to decide which supersoaker to buy. I'm horrible). But, this is free. FREE. FREE! So I want your help. Since these CDs are free (I know, I know, I gotta pay shipping and handling, but that's like $3 per CD, which isn't bad. In fact, to go off on a rant here, CDs and DVDs should be, by just manufacturing costs, substantially cheaper than their tape counterparts. CDs and DVDs don't have any moving parts, and the technology isn't exactly mind-boggling. Think about that the next time you wonder why piracy runs rampant on $18 CDs, and to a lesser extent on $35-40 DVDs), I'm inclined to be a bit more whimsical with my purchases than usual. So, here's what I'd like to do. I'll list off the larger chunks of my music collection, so people get a sense of what I like, and what I've already got. Then, send in your recommendations of what you think I should get. Really, I just want to hear everyone's thoughts on this. Naturally, since she'd probably have to listen to it at least once or twice, Liz's recommendations get a little more weight to them, but I'm really interested in hearing what everyone has to recommend. That said, here's what my music collection sort of looks like I've got every R.E.M. album out or due to arrive RSN (right, KT? ;-) ), all the Squirrel Nut Zippers albums, some early Pearl Jam, the "original" Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back soundtracks (not the re-releases, which I'll admit I'm tempted by), Phantom Menace soundtrack, some Queen, Peter Gabriel, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Robert Johnson, Billy Joel, some Blues Brothers stuff, some of Weird Al's latest albums, a bit of Monty Python, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and, um, onesies and twosies of stuff scattered all over. The two albums I just got are Santana's Supernatural which I really like, probably because I don't listen to the radio so I haven't heard these songs 80 million times, and Miles Davis's Bitches Brew, which is really good. I'm leaning towards getting Kind of Blue as one of my CDs, since I've heard it, and really like it. Anyway, please, tell me what you think. Thanks! |
