Stoopid

*sniffle*

I hate sneezing. And sniffling. Just about anything that gets mentioned in the NyQuil ad, I hate. So I woke up this morning with a bit of a sore throat, and I've been sniffling and sneezing all day. :-P Just what I need. More mucous. Every now and then I wish there was some interface where I could talk to these autonomous bodily processes so I could figure out what was going on! Seriously. Hey, nose, why all the goddamn snot?! I've got all I need, thanks! Turn off the pumps!

Work has been all right, if rather frustrating lately. I've been trying to write a DLL for the first time without any documentation or anything, and that's been a rather frazzling experience at times. Especially when I finally get fed up with searching through the unhelpful Help function and go ask someone a question, and the answer always seems to be one of the most basic things that I should know...

See, here's the thing. I've never really done "Windows" programming before I came here, and I made that explicitly clear in my interview. Never done MFC before, but I've got a decent background in object-oriented programming, so I'll probably pick it up fairly quickly. And they were more or less satisfied with that, and I got the job. So my first real programming assignment is writing this DLL, with no real instructions. Bleah.

I hate going to ask people questions and feeling stoopid when the answer should be obvious. Like a few days ago, I was getting this Zen error message that basically said (in technically reduced terms):

"Cannot convert from class Banana to class Banana"

Well, geez, you shouldn't have to do any conversion. It's already a banana, why are you trying to convert it? I looked through all the documentation I could find on the banana class, no deal. Finally, I wrote Liz an email asking if she knew if there was something special that you had to do with bananas. Her response basically started out, "Oh, um, yeah. You can't do that with banana." Now, I know she didn't mean to or anything, but I still felt stoopid. Oh, yeah. Of course you can't use it that way. How silly of me.

And now I'm having another problem I can't figure out with the application I'm writing to test the DLL. And you know what? It's probably a fundamentally basic answer. But I'm really loathing going to ask someone about it, because I'm tired of feeling stoopid about this sort of thing.

At least it looks like it'll be a fun weekend. Liz and I are going to show her folks the dirt where eventually our house will be, and then we're going to go the circus! I'm really looking forward to it, and Liz seems really excited, too. Sunday is still chore day (Boo...), but KT's Alternity game is in the evening. I'd be happier with the game if it was Friday or Saturday night, when I wouldn't have to get up and go to work on the day after, but other people have bizarro schedules, and this is sort of the best and only time for everyone to get together and play.

Well, I've got to go find someone I can ask a stoopid question of...
